Dominant groups
Analysis of the five year age groups of Dunedin City in 2018 compared to Fernhill shows that there was a higher proportion of females in the younger age groups (under 15) as well as a higher proportion of females in the older age groups (65+).
Overall, 14.7% of the female population was aged between 0 and 14, and 17.1% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 8.6% and 15.5% respectively for Fernhill.
The major differences between the age structure of Dunedin City and Fernhill were:
- A larger percentage of persons aged 15 to 19 (10.1% compared to 6.4%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 25 to 29 (5.9% compared to 15.9%)
- A smaller percentage of persons aged 20 to 24 (10.8% compared to 16.3%)

From 2006 to 2018, Dunedin City's female population increased by 3,729 females (6.0%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.49% per year over the period.
The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2006 and 2018 were in the age groups:
- 60 to 64 (+1,146 persons)
- 65 to 69 (+996 persons)
- 55 to 59 (+825 persons)
- 40 to 44 (-717 persons)
