Migration summary

2018 migration patterns across New Zealand indicate, 34.4% did not move in the 5 years, 38% moved, and 6.6% had moved from overseas.

Migration, (or residential mobility), together with births and deaths are significant components of population change in New Zealand. The movement of people into, and out of an area directly influences the characteristics of the population, and the community's aspirations. Demand for services and facilities in an area will also be influenced by the characteristics of people moving in and out, and their family status (eg. with young children).

The main types of migration in New Zealand are migration to and from overseas, and migration within New Zealand. The most common form of migration is within New Zealand, and this largely involves moves between neighbouring and existing urban areas where moves are often short.

Looking at the level of population movement in Dunedin City can give an indication of whether the population are sedentary and likely to be in the area for a long time (and perhaps have significant ties to the community), or transient, and likely to move on. Related topics which can be viewed to get a clearer picture of population mobility include age groups, and housing tenure.

The data below provides a summary of where current residents lived five years ago.

For comparison to this dataset, across New Zealand, the proportion of the usual resident population who did not move in the 5 year period ending March 2018 was 34.4%, while 38% moved within New Zealand, and 6.6% had moved from overseas. It is not possible to compare the 'Moved within the Territorial Area' category across New Zealand due to the vastly different sizes of different Territorial areas.

Please note:Stats NZ has given usual residence five years ago data for the 2018 Census a quality rating of "poor". The 2013 census was the only source of data for this variable, and no alternative data sources have been used. This is not comparable to earlier Censuses where a question was asked. In 2018 no question about previous residence 5 years ago was asked and the information was collected entirely by matching to the previous Census. There were no admin data or imputation used to replace missing responses, and almost 15% of population could not be matched to an address in 2013. See Stats NZ’s DataInfo+ for specific information on what this rating means and recommendations for use.
