The size of the Wairoa District's labour force in 2013 was 3,600 persons, of which 792 were employed part-time and 2,388 were full time workers.

Analysis of the employment status (as a percentage of the labour force) in the Wairoa District in 2013 compared to the Hawke's Bay Region shows that there was a lower proportion in employment, and a higher proportion unemployed.
