This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.
When viewed in conjunction with Residents Place of Work data and Method of Travel to Work, industry sector statistics provide insights into the relationship between the economic and residential role of the area.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Opoho in 2018 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Education and training (165 people or 25.0%)
- Health care and social assistance (111 people or 16.8%)
- Professional, scientific and technical services (81 people or 12.3%)
In combination these three industries employed 357 people in total or 54.1% of the employed resident population.
In comparison, Macandrew Bay-Company Bay employed 20.2% in Education and training; 15.8% in Health care and social assistance; and 11.0% in Professional, scientific and technical services.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Opoho and Macandrew Bay-Company Bay were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in education and training (25.0% compared to 20.2%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in construction (3.6% compared to 8.6%)

- Health care and social assistance (+21 persons)
- Accommodation and food services (-18 persons)
- Public administration and safety (+18 persons)
