Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Dunedin City in 2018 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:
- Education and training (8,847 people or 13.9%)
- Health care and social assistance (8,715 people or 13.7%)
- Retail trade (6,399 people or 10.0%)
In combination these three industries employed 23,961 people in total or 37.5% of the employed resident population.
In comparison, the Macandrew Bay-Company Bay employed 20.2% in Education and training; 15.8% in Health care and social assistance; and 6.2% in Retail trade.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of the Dunedin City and the Macandrew Bay-Company Bay were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed in retail trade (10.0% compared to 6.2%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed in accommodation and food services (7.9% compared to 4.5%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in education and training (13.9% compared to 20.2%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (8.0% compared to 11.0%)

The number of employed people in Dunedin City increased by 5,688 between 2006 and 2018.
The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2006 and 2018 in the Dunedin City were for those employed in:
- Education and training (+2,991 persons)
- Professional, scientific and technical services (+1,878 persons)
- Manufacturing (-1,689 persons)
- Health care and social assistance (+1,608 persons)
