Industry sector of employment

More Pataua residents worked in health care and social assistance in 2018 than any other industry.

This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

Please note that in the 2018 Census, where data are not provided, responses are sourced from administrative datasets, in line with the procedures developed by Statistics New Zealand to supplement the 2018 dataset. Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Pataua in 2018 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Health care and social assistance (108 people or 12.5%)
  • Manufacturing (102 people or 11.8%)
  • Construction (96 people or 11.1%)

In combination these three industries employed 306 people in total or 35.4% of the employed resident population.

In comparison, Whangarei District Council employed 13.9% in Health care and social assistance; 10.1% in Manufacturing; and 10.7% in Construction.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Pataua and Whangarei District Council were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (10.4% compared to 7.1%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in manufacturing (11.8% compared to 10.1%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in retail trade (6.6% compared to 9.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in accommodation and food services (3.8% compared to 5.4%)

The number of employed people in Pataua increased by 219 between 2013 and 2018.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2013 and 2018 in Pataua were for those employed in:

  • Construction (+39 persons)
  • Manufacturing (+36 persons)
  • Health care and social assistance (+27 persons)
  • Public administration and safety (+24 persons)
