Wellington City had a lower proportion of female pre-schoolers and a lower proportion of females at post retirement age than Wellington Region in 2018.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the service age groups of Wellington City in 2018 compared to Wellington Region shows that there was a lower proportion of females in the younger age groups (0 to 17 years) as well as a lower proportion of females in the older age groups (60+ years).

Overall, 18.7% of the female population was aged between 0 and 17, and 15.5% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 21.3% and 20.4% respectively for Wellington Region.

The major differences between the female age structure of Wellington City and Wellington Region were:

  • A larger percentage of 'Tertiary education and independence (18 to 24)' (14.6% compared to 10.2%)
  • A larger percentage of 'Young workforce (25 to 34)' (17.7% compared to 14.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Seniors (70 to 84)' (5.9% compared to 8.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of 'Empty nesters and retirees (60 to 69)' (8.1% compared to 9.9%)

Emerging groups

From 2013 to 2018, Wellington City's female population increased by 5,436 females (5.5%). This represents an average annual female population change of 1.08% per year over the period.

The largest changes in the female age structure in this area between 2013 and 2018 were in the age groups:

  • Young workforce (25 to 34) (+2,079 females)
  • Older workers and pre-retirees (50 to 59) (+1,059 females)
  • Empty nesters and retirees (60 to 69) (+966 females)
  • Seniors (70 to 84) (+867 females)
