In 2018, the largest single religion in Wellington City was Catholic, with 11.1% of the population or 22,575 people as adherents.

Dominant groups

Analysis of the religious affiliation of the population of Wellington City in 2018 compared to Wellington Region shows that there was a lower proportion of people who professed a religion and a higher proportion who stated they had no religion.

Overall, 42.1% of the population nominated a religion, and 53.2% said they had no religion, compared with 44.2% and 50.2% respectively for Wellington Region.

The largest single religion in Wellington City was Catholic, with 11.1% of the population or 22,575 people as adherents.

The major differences between the religious affiliation for the population of Wellington City and Wellington Region were:

  • A larger percentage who nominated Hindu (3.7% compared to 2.6%)
  • A smaller percentage who nominated Presbyterian, Congregational and Reformed (3.1% compared to 4.2%)
  • A smaller percentage who nominated Anglican (5.6% compared to 6.8%)
