Dominant groups

Analysis of the ethnic population in Whakaki in 2018 compared to Wairoa District shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who identified themselves as European, a larger proportion of people who identified themselves as Maori and a smaller proportion of people who identified themselves as Pacific Peoples.

Overall, 41.3% of the population identified themselves as European, 71.6% as Maori and 0.4% as Pacific Peoples, compared with 47.5%, 65.7% and 3.3% for Wairoa District respectively.

The major differences between the ethnic groups responses of the population in Whakaki and Wairoa District were:

  • A larger percentage of responses to Maori ethnic group (71.6% compared to 65.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of responses to European ethnic group (41.3% compared to 47.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of responses to Pacific peoples ethnic group (0.4% compared to 3.3%)
