The size of Mahia's labour force in 2018 was 561 persons, of which 150 were employed part-time and 339 were full time workers.

Analysis of the employment status (as a percentage of the labour force) in Mahia in 2018 compared to Wairoa District shows that there was a lower proportion in employment, and a higher proportion unemployed. Overall, 87.2% of the labour force was employed, and 12.8% unemployed, compared with 88.8% and 11.2% respectively for Wairoa District.
