The size of Wairoa District's labour force in 2018 was 4,086 persons, of which 945 were employed part-time and 2,682 were full time workers.

Analysis of the employment status (as a percentage of the labour force) in Wairoa District in 2018 compared to Whakaki shows that there was a similar proportion in employment, as well as a similar proportion unemployed. Overall, 88.8% of the labour force was employed, and 11.2% unemployed, compared with 89.1% and 10.9% respectively for Whakaki.
