The size of Upper Hutt City's labour force in 2018 was 24,573 persons, of which 4,557 were employed part-time and 18,582 were full time workers.

Analysis of the employment status (as a percentage of the labour force) in Upper Hutt City in 2018 compared to Wellington Region shows that there was a similar proportion in employment, as well as a similar proportion unemployed. Overall, 94.2% of the labour force was employed, and 5.8% unemployed, compared with 93.8% and 6.2% respectively for Wellington Region.
