Please note that in the 2018 Census, where data are not provided, responses are sourced from administrative datasets, in line with the procedures developed by Statistics New Zealand to supplement the 2018 dataset. Dominant groups

Analysis of the ethnic population in Papakowhai in 2018 compared to Porirua City shows that there was a larger proportion of people who identified themselves as European, a smaller proportion of people who identified themselves as Maori and a smaller proportion of people who identified themselves as Pacific Peoples.

Overall, 83.6% of the population identified themselves as European, 13.6% as Maori and 6.9% as Pacific Peoples, compared with 61.9%, 22.3% and 26.3% for Porirua City respectively.

The major differences between the ethnic groups responses of the population in Papakowhai and Porirua City were:

  • A larger percentage of responses to European ethnic group (83.6% compared to 61.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of responses to Pacific peoples ethnic group (6.9% compared to 26.3%)
  • A smaller percentage of responses to Maori ethnic group (13.6% compared to 22.3%)
