Location and boundaries
Onekawa South is bounded by Kennedy Road and Riverbend Road in the north, Latham Street and Riverbend Road in the east, Maraenui Park and the suburb of Meeanee in the south, and the Hikuwai River and Plantation Reserve in the west.
Onekawa South is named for the southern part of Onekawa, which was named from Māori words meaning 'bitter or sour sand'.

Settlement of the area dates from the late 1800s, although population was minimal until the post-war years. Rapid growth took place from the 1950s. The population was relatively stable during the late 1990s, increased slightly between 2001 and 2006, and then was stable again between 2006 and 2013.
Onekawa South is an established residential area.
Major features of the area include Maraenui Park, Oldham Avenue Reserve, Roberts Terrace Reserve, Pukemokimoki Marae and two schools.
