Location and boundaries
Onekawa Central - West is bounded by the suburb of Westshore and the Inner Harbour in the north, Pandora Road, Hyderabad Road, Taradale Road, Mangapoike River, the Haparapara River, Taradale Road and Riverbend Road in the east, Kennedy Road, Plantation Reserve, Taradale Road and the Hawke's Bay Expressway in the south, and Tamatea Drive and the suburb of Poraiti in the west.
Onekawa Central and West are named for the central and western parts of Onekawa, which was named from Māori words meaning 'bitter or sour sand'.

Settlement of the area dates from the late 1800s, although population was minimal until the post-war years. Rapid growth took place during the 1950s. The population fluctuated slightly between 1996 and 2006, and then increased between 2006 and 2013 as new dwellings were added to the area.
Onekawa Central - West is an established residential and industrial area.
Major features of the area include the Inner Harbour, Napier Aquatic Centre, Onekawa Shopping Centre, Ahuriri Estuary Walk, Onekawa Park, Humber Street Reserve and two schools.
