Settlement of the area dates from the 1860s, with growth during the late 1800s. Rapid development took place from the 1950s, including public housing. The population generally declined from the mid 1990s, a result of little change in dwelling stock, and a decline in dwelling occupancy rates and the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
Maraenui is an established residential area.
Major features of the area include Maraenui Shops Reserve, Fitzgerald Place Reserve and two schools.
