Settlement of the area dates from the 1850s, with growth during the late 1800s. The Napier Hospital opened in 1880 and closed in the late 1990s. Population growth resumed from the 1960s. The population declined slightly from the mid 1990s, a result of few new dwellings being added to the area and a decline in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
Hospital Hill is an established residential area.
Major features of the area include Napier Botanical Gardens, Gleeson Park and one school.
