Greenmeadows is bounded by the suburb of Poraiti, Wharerangi Road, Westminster Avenue, York Avenue, Fryberg Avenue, Islington Place and Kennedy Road in the north, the Hawke's Bay Expressway in the east, Burness Road, Guppy Road, Osier Road, Avondale Road and the suburb of Taradale North in the south, and Church Road and Puketitiri Road in the west.
Greenmeadows is named for the native danthonia grass which originally covered the area.

Settlement of the area dates from the 1850s, with land used mainly for sheep grazing. Population was minimal until the 1960s. Rapid growth took place during the 1970s. The population continued to increase from the 1980s as new dwellings were added to the area.
Greenmeadows is a mainly residential area.
Major features of the area include Anderson Park, Forward Street Reserve, Missionview Reserve Playground, Taipo Stream Walk, Greenmeadows East Community Hall and one school.
