Location and boundaries

Solway South is bounded by High Street in the north, Kuripuni Street, Dixon Street, Kuripuni Stream and the locality of Homebush-Te Ore Ore in the east, Manaia Road and South Road in the south, and the Waingawa River in the west.

Name origin

Solway South is named for the southern part of Solway, which is named after an original property in the area, which was named after a place in Galloway, Scotland.

Settlement history

European settlement of the area dates from the 1850s. Population was minimal until the late 1800s, with growth through to the early 1900s. Significant residential development occurred from the post-war years. The population declined slightly between 1996 and 2001, and then increased slightly between 2001 and 2013 as new dwellings were added to the area.
