Location and boundaries
Ngaumutawa is bounded by Atkinson Street, Oak Street and Balance Street in the north, Ngaumutawa Road in the east, Upper Plain Road and Chamberlain Road in the south, and Kibblewhite Road and Mary Street in the west.

European settlement of the area dates from the 1850s. Population was minimal until the late 1800s, with growth through to the early 1900s. Significant residential development occurred from the post-war years into the 1960s. The population declined marginally between 1996 and 2001, increased slightly between 2001 and 2006 as new dwellings were added to the area, and then was relatively stable between 2006 and 2013.
Ngaumutawa is an established residential area.
Major features of the area include Panama Park and Ben Irons Park.
