Analysis of the country of birth of the population in the Wellington Region in 2018 compared to North Island shows that there was a smaller proportion of people born overseas

Overall, 26.9% of the population was born overseas, compared to 28.9% for North Island.

The major differences between the countries of birth of the population in the Wellington Region and North Island were:

  • A larger percentage of people born in United Kingdom (7.2% compared to 5.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of people born in China, People's Republic of (1.7% compared to 3.3%)

Between 2013 and 2018, the number of people born overseas increased by 23,268 or 20.6%.
