In 2018, more of the workforce in Dunedin City was employed in education and training than any other industry.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the workforce in Dunedin City in 2018 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Education and training (8,361 people or 14.4%)
  • Health care and social assistance (8,208 people or 14.1%)
  • Retail trade (5,751 people or 9.9%)

In combination these three industries employed 22,320 people in total or 38.4% of the workforce.

In comparison, Otago Region employed 9.7% in Education and training; 9.9% in Health care and social assistance; and 9.8% in Retail trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the workforce in the Dunedin City and Otago Region were:

  • A larger percentage of people employed in education and training (14.4% compared to 9.7%)
  • A larger percentage of people employed in health care and social assistance (14.1% compared to 9.9%)
  • A smaller percentage of people employed in agriculture, forestry and fishing (2.1% compared to 7.5%)
  • A smaller percentage of people employed in construction (8.0% compared to 10.3%)

The workforce in Dunedin City increased by 8,382 people between 2013 and 2018.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the workforce between 2013 and 2018 in Dunedin City were for those employed in:

  • Education and training (+1,845 people)
  • Construction (+1,635 people)
  • Health care and social assistance (+1,401 people)
  • Professional, scientific and technical services (+1,164 people)
