Dunedin City
Workers' place of residence
In 2018, of the 58,092 people who worked in the Dunedin City, 57,135 or 98.4% also lived in the area.
Understanding where workers in an area come from is important information for Local Government. It assists in planning and advocacy for roads and public transport provision. It also helps to clarify the economic and employment drivers across areas. Areas with a high proportion of workers living locally may be large, city-sized TAs, or have a diverse range of jobs available which suit the occupation and education level of the local residents. Areas with most workers commuting in from other areas may be central city areas with more jobs than residents, or have an economic base that is not served by the skillset of local residents.
The data that are presented below are based on the 2018 Census Question: 'In the jobs that you worked the most hours in, during the 7 days to Sunday 4 March 2018, did you work at home, or work away from home?'. If the 'away from home' response is chosen, the question asked 'Print the full address of the place you mostly worked at.'
This dataset is then cross-tabulated with the person's current usual residential address to create a matrix of home to work, with the focus of the analysis on the work destination. All people in this table had a work destination in the Dunedin City, and the table breaks down their area of usual residence.
Derived from the Census:
'In that job, did you mostly? Work at home or work away from home. Print the full address of the place you mostly worked at.'
Employed persons aged 15 year and over
