There were more professionals in the Dunedin City than any other occupation in 2018.

Dominant groups
An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Dunedin City in 2018 shows the three most popular occupations were:
- Professionals (16,422 people or 25.7%)
- Managers (8,730 people or 13.7%)
- Technicians and trades workers (7,761 people or 12.2%)
In combination these three occupations accounted for 32,913 people in total or 51.6% of the employed resident population.
In comparison, the Wakari employed 28.1% in Professionals; 11.9% in Managers; and 13.3% in Technicians and trades workers.
The major differences between the jobs held by the population of the Dunedin City and the Wakari were:
- A larger percentage of persons employed as Managers (13.7% compared to 11.9%)
- A larger percentage of persons employed as Sales workers (10.0% compared to 8.2%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed as Professionals (25.7% compared to 28.1%)
- A smaller percentage of persons employed as Clerical and administrative workers (11.0% compared to 12.2%)
