More Dunedin City residents worked in education and training in 2018 than any other industry.

This will be influenced by the skill base and socio-economic status of the residents as well as the industries and employment opportunities present in the region.

Please note that in the 2018 Census, where data are not provided, responses are sourced from administrative datasets, in line with the procedures developed by Statistics New Zealand to supplement the 2018 dataset. Due to this, there is no "Not elsewhere included" category in 2018, and users should use caution when comparing to earlier Census years.

Dominant groups

An analysis of the jobs held by the resident population in Dunedin City in 2018 shows the three most popular industry sectors were:

  • Education and training (8,847 people or 13.9%)
  • Health care and social assistance (8,715 people or 13.7%)
  • Retail trade (6,399 people or 10.0%)

In combination these three industries employed 23,961 people in total or 37.5% of the employed resident population.

In comparison, Kenmure employed 16.0% in Education and training; 12.3% in Health care and social assistance; and 9.6% in Retail trade.

The major differences between the jobs held by the population of Dunedin City and Kenmure were:

  • A larger percentage of persons employed in health care and social assistance (13.7% compared to 12.3%)
  • A larger percentage of persons employed in administrative and support services (3.7% compared to 2.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in professional, scientific and technical services (8.0% compared to 10.7%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons employed in education and training (13.9% compared to 16.0%)

Emerging groups

The number of employed people in Dunedin City increased by 7,800 between 2013 and 2018.

The largest changes in the jobs held by the resident population between 2013 and 2018 in Dunedin City were for those employed in:

  • Education and training (+1,965 persons)
  • Health care and social assistance (+1,416 persons)
  • Construction (+1,371 persons)
  • Professional, scientific and technical services (+1,302 persons)
