Dominant groups

Analysis of individual income levels in Dunedin City in 2018 compared to Otago Region shows that there was a lower proportion of persons earning a high income (those earning more than $70,000 per annum) and a higher proportion of low income persons (those earning less than $15,000 per annum).

Overall, 12.8% of the population earned a high income, and 30.0% earned a low income, compared with 14.3% and 25.0% respectively for Otago Region.

The major differences between Dunedin City's individual incomes and Otago Region's individual incomes were:

  • A larger percentage of persons who earned $1 to $5,000 (8.5% compared to 6.8%)
  • A larger percentage of persons who earned $5,001 to $10,000 (7.1% compared to 5.8%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons who earned $30,001 to $40,000 (9.8% compared to 11.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons who earned $50,001 to $70,000 (12.8% compared to 14.3%)
