Dominant groups

Analysis of the five year age groups of Dunedin City in 2018 compared to Otago Region shows that there was a lower proportion of people in the younger age groups (under 15) and a similar proportion of people in the older age groups (65+).

Overall, 15.8% of the population was aged between 0 and 14, and 16.1% were aged 65 years and over, compared with 16.6% and 16.5% respectively for Otago Region.

The major differences between the age structure of Dunedin City and Otago Region were:

  • A larger percentage of persons aged 20 to 24 (10.7% compared to 8.3%)
  • A larger percentage of persons aged 15 to 19 (9.6% compared to 7.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 30 to 34 (5.7% compared to 6.6%)
  • A smaller percentage of persons aged 25 to 29 (6.3% compared to 7.2%)

From 2013 to 2018, Dunedin City's population increased by 6,012 people (5.0%). This represents an average annual population change of 0.98% per year over the period.

The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2013 and 2018 were in the age groups:
