Settlement of the area dates primarily from the late 1800s. Significant development occurred during the early 1900s, aided by the opening of the railway line. Growth continued from the 1940s. The population generally declined slightly from the mid 1990s, a result of some new dwellings being added to the area but a decline in dwelling occupancy rates.
Lower Aramoho is an established residential and industrial area.
