Gonville West is named for the western part of Gonville, which is named after Gonville Saunders, the son of an early land holder in the area.

Settlement history

Settlement of the area dates primarily from the late 1800s, with growth through to the early 1900s. Expansion resumed between the 1920s and 1940s. The population and dwelling stock were relatively stable between 1996 and 2006, and then declined slightly between 2006 and 2013.
