Castlecliff North is named for the northern part of Castlecliff, which is thought to be named for the isolated stacks off the cliffs seen when the first European settlers arrived.

Settlement of the area dates primarily from the 1880s. Significant development occurred between the 1920s and 1940s. The population gradually declined from the mid 1990s, a result of little change in dwelling stock, and a decline in dwelling occupancy rates and the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
Castlecliff North is an established residential area, with some rural areas in the north-east.
