Dominant groups

Analysis of the ethnic population in the Wellington City in 2013 compared to the Wellington Region shows that there was a similar proportion of people who identified themselves as European, a smaller proportion of people who identified themselves as Māori and a smaller proportion of people who identified themselves as Pacific Peoples.

Overall, 72.8% of the population identified themselves as European, 7.6% as Māori and 4.7% as Pacific Peoples, compared with 73.2%, 12.4% and 7.7% for the Wellington Region respectively.

The major differences between the ethnic groups responses of the population in the Wellington City and the Wellington Region were:

  • A larger percentage of responses to Asian ethnic group (14.9% compared to 10.0%)
  • A smaller percentage of responses to Māori ethnic group (7.6% compared to 12.4%)
  • A smaller percentage of responses to Pacific peoples ethnic group (4.7% compared to 7.7%)
