Dominant groups

The size of the Wellington City's labour force in 2013 was 112,611 persons, of which 21,822 were employed part-time and 83,421 were full time workers.

Analysis of the employment status (as a percentage of the labour force) in the Wellington City in 2013 compared to the Wellington Region shows that there was a higher proportion in employment, and a lower proportion unemployed. Overall, 93.5% of the labour force was employed (66.6% of the population aged 15+), and 6.5% unemployed (4.7% of the population aged 15+), compared with 92.8% and 7.2% respectively for the Wellington Region.

Analysis of the labour force participation rate of the population in the Wellington City in 2013 shows that there was a higher proportion in the labour force (71.3%) compared with the Wellington Region (66.9%).

Emerging groups

Between 2006 and 2013, the number of people employed in the Wellington City showed an increase of 2,610 persons and the number unemployed showed an increase of 2,154 persons. In the same period, the number of people in the labour force showed an increase of 4,764 persons, or 4.4%.
