Wilton is bounded generally by the suburb of Crofton Downs, Wilton Bush Road, Wilton Road and Norwich Street in the north, the suburbs of Wadestown and Thorndon in the east, the suburb of Northland, Huntingdon Street, Pembroke Road, Cheshire Street, Worcester Street, Wilton Road, Curtis Street and Old Karori Road in the south, and the suburb of Karori and the locality of Makara in the west.

Colonial settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, with land used mainly for farming. Population was minimal until the late 1800s. Rapid growth took place during the 1920s. The population increased slightly between 2001 and 2006 as new dwellings were added to the area, and then was relatively stable between 2006 and 2013.
Wilton is a residential area overlooking reserve land.
This small area encompasses most of the suburb of Wilton, and small parts of Karori and Northland.
