Rongotai - Moa Point is bounded by Batten Street and the harbour in the north, generally by Calabar Road, Broadway, Miramar Golf Club and the suburb of Strathmore Park in the east, Cook Strait in the south, and the suburb of Lyall Bay, Resolution Street, Yule Street, Endeavour Street, Coutts Street, Salek Street and Rongotai Road in the west.

Colonial settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s. Growth took place from the late 1800s into the 1920s. The airport was opened in 1959, following land reclamation and the demolition of about 180 houses. Expansion continued from the post-war years. The population declined slightly between 1996 and 2013, a result of little change in dwelling stock and a decline in dwelling occupancy rates.
