Colonial settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for farming. Population was minimal until the 1880s. Growth took place from the late 1800s into the early 1900s. Expansion continued from the 1970s. Gentrification and redevelopment took place from the 1980s, with high-rise apartment blocks replacing many colonial houses. The population increased slightly between 2001 and 2006, and then declined slightly between 2006 and 2013, largely due to fluctuations in dwelling occupancy rates.
