Colonial settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for farming and timber-getting. Population was minimal until the early 1900s when land was subdivided. The population increased slightly between 2001 and 2013, a result of new dwellings being added to the area and an increase in the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
Northland is an established residential area.
This area encompasses most of the suburb of Northland, and a small part of Wilton.
