Ngaio is bounded by the locality of Ohariu and the suburb of Khandallah in the north, Fox Street, Amapur Drive, Kandy Crescent, Malda Grove, Amapur Drive, the railway line, Ngatoto Street, Swansea Street, Mysore Street, Bankot Crescent, Cockayne Road and the suburb of Khandallah in the east, the suburb of Wadestown in the south, and the railway line and the suburb of Crofton Downs in the west.

Colonial settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, with land used mainly for timber-getting and farming. Growth took place from the 1880s, spurred by the opening of the railway line. Expansion continued during the early 1900s. Significant development occurred during the 1960s. The population increased gradually between 1996 and 2013, a result of new dwellings being added to the area, and an increase in dwelling occupancy rates and the average number of persons living in each dwelling.
Ngaio is a predominantly residential area, bordered by hills to the north west.
This area encompasses most of the suburb of Ngaio, and small parts of Khandallah and Kaiwharawhara.
