Berhampore is bounded generally by Macalister Park, Adelaide Road, the suburb of Newtown, Rintoul Street and Waripori Street in the north, Russell Terrace and Mt Albert Road in the east, the Town Belt, Melbourne Road, Dover Street and a line running continuous of Dover Street in the south, and the Town Belt and the suburb of Mornington in the west.

Colonial settlement of the area dates from the 1840s, with land used mainly for farming. Population was minimal until the 1870s. Rapid growth took place during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The population increased between 1996 and 2006 as new dwellings were added to the area, and then was relatively stable between 2006 and 2013 as fewer new dwellings were added and dwelling occupancy rates declined.
Berhampore is an established residential area.
