In 2018, 28.1% of the population in Wairoa District were regular smokers.

Dominant groups

Analysis of smoking behaviour in Wairoa District in 2018 compared to Hawke's Bay Region shows that there was a higher proportion of people were regular smokers, a lower proportion of people who were ex-smokers and a decreased by proportion of people who had never smoked regularly.

Overall, 28.1% of Wairoa District's population were current smokers, 25.7% were ex-smokers and 46.2% had never smoked regularly, compared with 16.1%, 26.4% and 57.5% for Hawke's Bay Region respectively.

Emerging groups

The largest changes in the smoking behaviour of the population in Wairoa District between 2013 and 2018 were for:

  • Never smoked regularly (+579 persons)
  • Regular smoker (+264 persons)
