Dominant groups

Analysis of the language spoken by the population of Wairoa District in 2018 compared to Hawke's Bay Region shows that there was a smaller proportion of people who spoke English only, and a larger proportion of those who spoke Māori, or Māori and English.

Overall, 74.9% spoke English only and 18.8% spoke Māori, or Māori and English, compared with 82.6% and 6.3% respectively for Hawke's Bay Region.

The dominant language spoken at home, other than English, in Wairoa District was Māori , with 19.9% of the population, or 1,665 people speaking this language at home.

The major differences between the languages spoken at home for the population of Wairoa District and Hawke's Bay Region in 2018 were:
