European settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, spurred by gold mining in nearby Thames. Growth took place during the late 1800s. The most rapid development occurred during the 1950s and 1960s. The population declined slightly between 1996 and 2013, due to little change in dwelling stock and a decline in dwelling occupancy rates.
Thames Coast is a largely rural area, with small township and holiday areas in the west, along the coast.
