European settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, although population was minimal until the 1860s when townships and timber milling were established. During the early 1900s the main land use became farming. Population was minimal until the post-war years. Rapid growth took place in Tairua and Pauanui from the 1960s, spurred by the area becoming a popular holiday destination. The population increased slightly between 1996 and 2001 as new dwellings were added to the area, and then declined slightly between 2001 and 2013.
Tairua-Pauanui Community Board is a largely rural area, with township and holiday areas at Pauanui and Tairua.
Major features of the area include Tairua Harbour, Shoe Island, Slipper Island, Waipapa Island, Pauanui Beach, Coromandel Forest Park, Lakes Resort Golf Course, Pauanui Sports & Recreation Club (The Pines and The Lakes Golf Courses), Pauanui Mini Putt, Cory Park, Gallagher Park, Kennedy Park, Pauanui Skate Park, Pohutukawa Grove Recreation Reserve, Pauanui Shopping Centre, Pauanui Airfield, the Tairua Ferry and several schools.
