The size of the Ruapehu District's labour force in 2013 was 6,006 persons, of which 1,266 were employed part-time and 4,254 were full time workers.

Analysis of the employment status (as a percentage of the labour force) in the Ruapehu District in 2013 compared to the Manawatu-Wanganui Region shows that there was a similar proportion in employment, as well as a similar proportion unemployed. Overall, 91.9% of the labour force was employed (60.8% of the population aged 15+), and 8.1% unemployed (5.4% of the population aged 15+), compared with 92.2% and 7.8% respectively for the Manawatu-Wanganui Region.
