Waitangirua is bounded by Adventure in the north and east, the northern suburbs of Wellington City and Cannons Creek South in the south, and Cannons Creek East and Driver Crescent in the west.
Waitangirua means the music of two streams (Waitangi and Cameron’s Streams). Most of the streets are named after ships owned by the Union Steamship Company.

European settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, with land used mainly for farming. Population was minimal until the 1960s. Rapid growth took place from the mid 1960s, including public housing construction. The population fluctuated slightly between 1996 and 2013, due to small changes in dwelling stock and the average number of persons in each dwelling.
