Marewa is bounded by Hyderabad Road in the north, Georges Drive and Chambers Street in the east, the suburbs of Maraenui, Onekawa South and Onekawa Central and parkland in the south, and the Haparapara River, the Mangapoike River and Taradale Road in the west.
Marewa is named from a Māori word meaning 'raised up', referring to the raising up of the area after the 1931 earthquake.

Settlement of the area dates from the 1860s, with growth during the late 1800s. More substantial development took place from the 1930s. Infill development occurred from the 1970s. The population increased slightly between 2001 and 2013 as new dwellings were added to the area.
