Bay View was previously known as Petane.

Settlement of the area dates from the 1860s, with the township developing as a staging post and local service centre. More substantial growth took place after the earthquake of 1931, aided by improved transport and the popularity of the area as a holiday destination. The population increased gradually between 1996 and 2013 as new dwellings were added to the area.
Bay View is a rural and rural-residential area, with residential areas along the coast, and an airport in the south. Rural land is used largely for market gardening (grain and field crops) and grazing, with some viticulture.
