European settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, with land used largely for timber-getting and farming. Population was minimal until the early 1900s. Significant residential development took place from the mid 1940s into the 1960s. The population and dwelling stock were relatively stable between 1996 and 2006, and then increased slightly between 2006 and 2013.
Parkway is an established residential area, with rural areas in the west, a commercial area in the east, and an industrial area around Waiu Street.
Major features of the area include Wainuiomata Shopping Centre, Bryan Heath Park, Frederick Wise Park, Hugh Sinclair Park, Parkway Family Playground, Wainuiomata Mountain Bike Park, Wainuiomata Community Centre, Wainuiomata Memorial Hall and several schools.
