Name origin

Epuni West is named after the Ngati Awa chief Honiana Te Puni.

Settlement history

European settlement of the area dates from the mid 1800s, although population was minimal until the early 1900s. Rapid residential development occurred from the 1940s when government housing was constructed. Growth was aided by the extension of the railway line. The population fluctuated slightly between 1996 and 2013, due to small changes in dwelling stock and the average number of persons living in each dwelling.

Epuni West is an established residential area, with two hospitals in the north.
