The age structure of the population is derived from the Date of Birth recorded on the Census form. It is consistent from 1996 to 2006.
Analysis of the age structure of Wanganui District in 2006 compared to New Zealand shows that there was a higher proportion of people in the younger age groups (0 to 14) as well as a higher proportion of people in the older age groups (60+).
Overall, 21.6% of the population was aged between 0 and 14, and 20.0% were aged 60 years and over, compared with 21.5% and 15.3% respectively for New Zealand.
The major differences between the age structure of Wanganui District and New Zealand were:
- A larger percentage of 70 to 74 (4.2% compared to 2.9%);
- A larger percentage of 75 to 79 (3.7% compared to 2.5%);
- A smaller percentage of 20 to 24 (4.9% compared to 6.7%), and;
- A smaller percentage of 25 to 29 (4.5% compared to 6.0%).
The largest changes in age structure in this area between 2001 and 2006 were in the age groups:
- 55 to 59 (+576 persons);
- 25 to 29 (-384 persons);
- 35 to 39 (-384 persons), and;
- 0 to 4 (-342 persons).
