Wanganui Collegiate is an established residential and educational area. Wanganui Collegiate is bounded by Great North Road, Victoria Avenue and Glasgow Street in the north, the railway line and Purnell Street in the east, Jackson Street and Carlton Avenue in the south, and Parsons Street in the west. Wanganui Collegiate is named after the school in the area.

Settlement of the area dates from the 1850s. Population was minimal until the 1880s. Rapid growth took place between 1914 and the early 1930s. The population fluctuated slightly from the mid 1990s, due to small changes in dwelling stock and the average number of persons living in each dwelling.

Major features of the area include Springvale Park, Victoria Park, Wanganui Community Sports Centre (including Jubilee and Springvale Stadiums), Splash Centre Wanganui, Wanganui Collegiate School and Wanganui High School.
